Irene Neal

"The shape of the pouring is the shape of the painting, a paint-thing with no predetermined

composition.  Neal controls the color mix in the bucket, with an initial small amount of white to retain a sense of light.  She then adds modest bits of dispersed colors that are barely stirred into the depths of the medium.  Neal's hands-off approach creates a freshness expressive of the natural interaction of liquids and gravity.  A large percentage of her artistic decision-making comes from editing- deciding which final works pass the eye test and which do not."                                                                                  Abstract Painting, Vicky Perry

But Neal is now breaking new ground on paper.  The second type of painting most recently created is the work on paper.  In these pieces such as "Thunderhead", the paint is often a mixture of acrylic and ink...poured onto a very smooth paper or board... so that the rich colors speak freely with each other!  A tricky set up which requires total attention!

"Energized but calm, Neal's paintings hold us in suspense with the weight of their lightness and sensitivity.  Charging her surfaces with a play of energetic physical releases the artist compels us with her visual conundrums......each image refers to the inner world resolutely living in a life of pure, non-objective form.  The result is poetic visual imagination at its best....."                                                                  ARTIFACT catalog, July 2013, John Austin

Following the "poetic" aspect of the last writing, Neal is now doing a 70 page booklet of her poetry/paintings On My Way To Mars.....Poems and Paintings As Far As The Stars with The painting "Bedtime Fish Stories" as the cover.
